What’s in a name?

After being here for a little under a week, it has become apparent that my name is nonexistent in the UK – at least how I pronounce it. Tara (pronounced Tahra) is widely understood, but Tara (pronounced Terra) is not. I was ordering food from a food cart today and the friendly woman taking orders asked for my name. She started spelling it Terra, so I said, “I guess it’s Tara [Tahra] in the UK.” She crossed off the name she had started writing and spelled my name correctly. What’s a girl to do? Is it acceptable that while I’m in London, I go by Tara (pronounced Tahra)? Or should I stick to how my name was intended to be said said, Tara (pronounced Terra)?

  1. It never crossed my mind when I was naming you Tara that you would end up in London with pronunciation problems. Look at it like tomato tomahto. Both are fine.

Watching the Canucks game. It’s gone into overtime. Kessler scored 2 and then the Sharks came back to tie it up with less than a minute to go. Exciting, but painful!
